Suzanne C. Dort

Suzanne C Dort, 70, of Seminole, Florida, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 22, 2024, at home surrounded by family and loved ones. 

Sue was born on March 2, 1954, in St Petersburg Florida to Catherine McFarland Cook.  She attended Dixie Hollins Sr High School Class of 1972 and the University of South Florida, BA in Business Administration Class of 1986. Sue enjoyed a variety of artistic vocations as well as a professional business career. Those vocations included cosmetology, floral design, cake decorating, sewing, quilting, baking, and various arts & crafts. She was the Cub Scout Den Mother/Scout Leader for both of her sons. One of her favorite jobs was working at St Pete Clearwater Airport, PIE Operations.  While there, she took flying lessons and even soloed. Sue also worked at Pinellas County Economic Development.   Throughout all of her vocations, additionally, Sue enjoyed 43 years of income tax preparation.  21 of those tax preparation years she enjoyed working beside her son, Douglas, at Financial & Retirement Strategies in Clearwater.

Sue was a very caring, philanthropic person and devout Christian.  One of her favorite quotes was “faith over fear”.  She was always there for her beloved family and dear friends, offering support, wisdom, love and prayers.  Sue was an engaged and active participant in her church, St. Paul United Methodist Church of Largo through the Basket Weaving Ministry and the Prayer Shawl Ministry, and Al-Anon of St Pete. Sue was an active volunteer and also held board positions with the P.E.O Sisterhood, and the St. Petersburg Doll Club.

Sue is survived by her loving husband Nelson, of 51years, her sons, Douglas, Seminole, FL, and Brian, St, Petersburg, FL, her grandson Brian Thomas Jr and her step-granddaughter, Emily Genevie.  She is also survived by her brother, Donny McFarland, her nieces and nephew, Diane Mettler, Cheryl Butler, Tommy D Long, III, and many friends who Sue has loved throughout her life. 

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Largo, FL on Saturday, September 7th at 10 am.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to:
