Shirley Kane

Shirley Kane, 87, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2026, in St. Petersburg, FL, the city she called home for most of her life. Born in Dearborn, MI, on October 22, 1938, Shirley was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, and a woman whose kindness and strength touched all who knew her. She had a deeply rooted Christian faith and a profound love for Jesus, which guided her throughout her life. Shirley was the beloved wife of Joseph Damien Kane, with whom she shared a beautiful 68 years of marriage. The couple first met at a dance, sparking a lifelong love of dancing that eventually led them to become avid square dancers in their later years.

Joseph’s 21 years of service in the United States Air Force took their family to many parts of the world. Through every move, Shirley cared for her home and family with devotion, raising their three children. When Joseph retired from the military in 1975, they relocated back to Florida, where they had met 18 years earlier. Shirley held various positions during their moves—earning her real estate license and working for a dentist—before building a long career with Honeywell, where she worked until her retirement in 1994.

Active in her community, Shirley was a proud member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for many years and belonged to the Power Squadron boating club alongside her husband. She enjoyed crafts, bowling, crocheting, cruising, reading, and watching The Price is Right. She also loved traveling the world on vacation.

Shirley is survived by her devoted husband, Joseph; her loving children, Steven Kane and his wife Susan, Jeffrey Kane, and Karen McMullen and her husband James McMullen. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Joseph Kane, Jessie Crews and her husband Kyle, Matthew McMullen and his wife Kinsey, and Ryan McMullen and his wife Ashlee; as well as her precious great-grandchildren, Rackel Urrestta, Zoe Kane, Reagan Crews, Jensen McMullen, and Cainan McMullen.

Shirley was the true cornerstone of her family, and her warmth, guidance, and presence will be profoundly missed by everyone who loved her. Her life leaves a beautiful legacy, and she will be forever remembered.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Bay Pines National Cemetery, located at 10000 Bay Pines Blvd. N., St. Petersburg, FL 33708. Following the service, all family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life reception featuring wine and light refreshments at 11:30 AM at Lake Seminole Square, located at 8333 Seminole Blvd., Seminole, FL 33772.
