Kenneth Douglas Vanderhyde

Kenneth Douglas Vanderhyde of Oldsmar, Florida, passed away on July 9, 2026, at the age of 88 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on June 5, 1938, in Flint, Michigan, Ken graduated from Beecher High School before earning his degree in Pharmacy from the University of Michigan. During his college years, he participated in the ROTC program and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.

While attending college, Ken married Pamela Tarrant, and together they welcomed two daughters and a son. Years later, Ken found love again and married Mary Brigman in 1985. They shared 29 wonderful years together, creating a lifetime of cherished memories.

Ken was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Vanderhyde; his former wife, Pamela Vanderhyde; and his beloved wife, Mary Brigman Vanderhyde.

Ken is survived by his daughter, Katherine Bailey (Vanderhyde) of Winter Park, Florida; his son, Doug Vanderhyde (Dawn) of Newaygo, Michigan; his stepsons, Joe Spinola of Orlando, Florida, and Angelo Spinola (Jodi) of Atlanta, Georgia; and seven beloved grandchildren. He is also survived by his cherished companion and partner of the past three years, Jeanne Wessner of St. Petersburg, Florida, whose love, companionship, and devoted care brought great joy and comfort to Ken in his later years; special friends Matt Middlebrooks and Linda Dalkin of Alexandria, Virginia; and Ross Spoelma of White Cloud, Michigan.

Throughout his life, Ken was dedicated to serving others. He enjoyed a distinguished career as both a United Airlines pilot and a pharmacist, practicing in Ann Arbor, Michigan; Ellicott City, Maryland; and White Cloud, Michigan. In retirement, Ken and Mary continued their commitment to helping others through their volunteer work with Suncoast Hospice in Florida.

Ken lived a life defined by service, adventure, and kindness. Whether flying across the country, caring for patients, volunteering in his community, or spending time with family and friends, he approached each day with generosity, humor, and a genuine appreciation for life.

He will be remembered for his quick wit, infectious sense of humor, and sincere compassion for those around him. Ken found great joy in the outdoors, especially golfing, goose and deer hunting, baseball and slow-pitch softball. His love for family, friends, and community left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Suncoast Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ken’s honor to the American Cancer Society, Moffitt Cancer Center, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date with immediate family members.

“A life well lived is measured not by years alone, but by the lives touched along the way. Ken’s legacy of service, friendship, laughter, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.”
