It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of MSG (RET) Charles E. Chaney, who departed this life on November 5, 2024, at Bay Pines Veterans Hospital. He was a devoted soldier, a loving family member, and a cherished friend to many.
Born in Hurricane, West Viriginia and raised in Sebring, Ohio, Charles graduated from Sebring McKinley High School in 1962. Shortly after, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army, where he dedicated 23 years of his life to military service. His journey began with the 8th Artillery in South Korea from 1962 to 1963, where he laid the foundation for a distinguished career.
Charles’s courageous spirit led him to Vietnam, serving as a forward observer for the Vietnamese Rangers with the Military Assistance Command-Vietnam, from 1964 to 1965. His commitment to duty continued with the 10th Special Forces Group in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968, where he showcased his extraordinary skills and bravery. Following his second combat tour, he held various significant roles, including assignments with the 10th Special Forces Group at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, and the 7th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as a member of the group’s 705th Military Intelligence Detachment. Charles later became a Senior Drill Instructor at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and served as the S2 NCOIC for the 8th Army in the Republic of South Korea. His final military assignment was as an ROTC instructor at the Florida Institute of Technology from 1979 to 1984.
Throughout his illustrious career, Charles received numerous awards and decorations, including the Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal (two awards), Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Device, Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Service Star, Good Conduct Medal (7 Awards), Army Achievement Medal, Master Parachutist Badge, and the Combat Infantryman Badge, among others. His commitment to excellence was further exemplified through his extensive military education, which included specialized training in various courses such as the Special Forces Course, Army Ranger Course, the Army Scuba Course, and Drill Sergeant School.
Charles is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lois Chaney, and daughter Onnaliesa Chaney. Charles’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched during his service and beyond. He will be remembered not only for his remarkable contributions to the military but also for his kindness, mentorship, and unwavering support to his fellow soldiers and community.
As we honor the life of MSG (RET) Charles E. Chaney, we celebrate a man who embodied bravery, dedication, and integrity. The world 🌎 lost a light w his departure. Still the best human I’ve ever met. I love him dearly
My Uncle Chuck is my hero! I have always been so proud of him, not only for his patriotism and courage, but for being a great man. Always smiling and positive, everyone’s friend…a true friend. Above all, a wonderful loving and caring husband, father and uncle. Love you, Uncle Chuck ❤️
God speed, Charles
Charles has been the kind of neighbor everyone dreams of having—loyal, kind, and always willing to lend a hand. As an E4 Army grunt, I’ve always admired and looked up to him, a 1st Sergeant and a shining example of leadership and integrity. Although tradition says NCOs don’t get saluted, every time I saw him, I couldn’t help but offer one out of pure respect. Charles represents a generation that truly embodies honor and selflessness. He will forever be remembered as a man who dedicated his life to helping others and uplifting those in need. Today, and always, I salute you, Charles.

We are truly heartbroken with Charles’s passing. From the very first meeting, we knew Charles was special. We shared a military connection and special bond with him. We are so fortunate to have been friends and neighbors with Charles and Lois. Charles was the epitome of the all American badass serving our country and the most kind and humble human in his every day life. We are going to miss you, Ranger! Keep your feet and knees together, Airborne! De Oppresso Liber
