Gloria Eugenia (Jean) Barnes (née Patrick) passed away on March 8, 2022. She was born on May 26, 1941, in Nashville, TN to Eva Mae and Ples Patrick. Gloria was a devoted mother and grandmother and loved her family more than anything besides the Lord. She enjoyed traveling, especially cruising, reading, golfing, listening to music, especially Gospel and Johnny Cash, and the Arts. She was a fantastic cook and loved to host parties. Gloria graduated from John Hay High School in Cleveland, Ohio in 1959. Upon her graduation, she enlisted in the United States Women’s Army Corps where she served as a Clerk Typist. While serving in the Army, she met Herbert Barnes, who became her husband and the father of their three daughters.
Gloria received her bachelor’s degree from Dyke College later in life, an accomplishment of which she and her family were very proud. She worked several years for the United States Postal Service before transferring to the US Postal Inspection Service from where she retired in 2001. She was a member of East Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as an usher, sang in the choir and was a member of the Mattie Williams Guild.
Gloria is survived by her daughters – Tanya of North Hollywood, CA, Stephanie of Cleveland Heights, OH, and Andrea of Seminole, FL; her granddaughters – Ashley-Victoria, Catherine (Katie), Kelli, Dakota, and Zoë and great-grandsons, Leo and Keanu. She is also survived by her sister Jewel Price of Richmond Heights, OH and brother Dwight Patrick of Thompson Station, TN and a host of relatives and friends.
Her memorial service will be held at East Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 9990 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44106 on April 9, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. The service can be viewed on East Mount Zion’s Facebook page and YouTube Channel.
