David was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and lived a life of service to others and embodied the spirit of warmth and selfless contribution every year as Santa Claus at Bon Secours Maria Manor and elsewhere. He greeted every new person as uncritically and without pretense as he would have expected to be greeted himself. No man is without flaws and David was aware of his own and used that self-awareness to make sure the ones he loved, and strangers he hoped to love, felt welcome in his presence. He liked to joke around. Even at the end, he was making those at his bedside laugh. He leaves a legacy of hope and determination to do well, and do better. William David Van Jelgerhuis left this world a better place than he found it.
